We conduct research in key areas of the creative industries and encourage the growth of applied research as an integral part of our academic offering. We have an international reputation as a research leader and collaborative partner on innovative digital projects.
Our research enables us to build bridges with industrial and academic partners whilst strengthening our teaching with innovative concepts.
Current research areas include:
- smart citiesimmersive film and narrative
- virtual and augmented reality
- wearables and novel materials
- digital pedagogy.
We are submitting researchers to our first research excellence framework for 2021 and expect to enter 20% of our permanent academic staff.
We host several successful European and UK-based research projects and are utilising their findings in new ventures, including updating courses and implementing commercial applications. Using our iconic building we host conferences, symposia and industry events with organisations such as Cambridge Wireless and ImmerseUK.
In the autumn of 2020, we are establishing a research and industry driven postgraduate hub, The Institute for Creativity and Technology, situated in the newly developed Design District. The intention is to explore and interrogate the interplay between creativity and technology across education, industry and society and represents a significant opportunity to raise the profile of research at the university.
